Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within the city.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of characters who will separate from the main group to begin their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the secret base, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could enable the team enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Fans can expect discovering which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
