The Substance
Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore delivers a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to starring in a fitness program on television. This generates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit mystery features the talented actress in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a hiatus from covering global conflict to embark on an opulent ship alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, plus additional extremely wealthy individuals. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Out now, on Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He plays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has made the children frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in this director's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple commence profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
Black Bag
This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh presents a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a double agent within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
