The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
