Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
